Authorities have apprehended two suspects connected to a sophisticated fake gold scam that defrauded Dubai-based investors of USD 54,300 (about Ksh 7 million), authorities confirmed today.
Nairobi, August 15, 2025 — Authorities have apprehended two suspects connected to a sophisticated fake gold scam that defrauded Dubai-based investors of USD 54,300 (about Ksh 7 million), authorities confirmed today.
Investigators say the victims were lured to Kenya under the pretext of purchasing 35 kilograms of gold. In Nairobi, they were introduced to accomplices masquerading as Kenya Revenue Authority customs officers, mining officials, and even private jet operators—complete with staged airport transfers.
At a swanky hotel in Kilimani, the investors handed over the money, only to discover the gold never materialized.
A months-long manhunt culminated in the arrests on August 13 by DCI’s Operation Support Unit, which identified the suspects as the scam masterminds. Initial investigations began in November 2024, when 31 accomplices were arrested in targeted raids across Runda, Ridgeways, and the Industrial Area.
The suspects were arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on August 14 for plea-taking, denying all charges. Their bond hearing is scheduled for August 18.
This case mirrors a similar scam uncovered just last week, where a Kenyan lawyer stands accused of defrauding a Canadian investor of USD 618,000 (Ksh 79.9 million) in a fake gold export deal involving a purported 250 kg consignment.
These sophisticated schemes reflect advance-fee scams—fraudsters entice victims with promises of high-value returns, only to vanish once funds are transferred. Impersonation tactics and fabricated documentation are common hallmarks.
