Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions has issued a stern warning against public speculation over the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, assuring that a meticulous investigation is underway to uncover the truth behind the fatal road crash.

The call for calm from DPP Renson Ingonga comes as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) delves into a complex probe, analysing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to retrace the 64-year-old’s final, puzzling journey. This high-profile investigation seeks to answer pressing questions from a public gripped by the sudden loss of a man who was, for decades, a formidable force in Kenyan politics.

A Timeline of Final Moments

The DCI has confirmed that a specialised team of homicide and forensic experts is handling the case. Investigators have recovered crucial CCTV footage from a petrol station near the Karai crash site, which documents Jirongo's vehicle in the seconds before the collision.

The timeline established by the DCI is precise and startling:

• 2:18:40 AM: Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz enters the Eagol Petrol Station from the Nairobi direction, but does not fuel.
• 2:19:10 AM: His vehicle stops at the station's exit for approximately nine seconds.
• 2:19:19 AM: The car makes a right turn, heading back towards Nairobi.
• 2:19:25 AM: Just six seconds later, the footage captures the Climax Company Ltd passenger bus ramming into his vehicle.

The head-on impact was catastrophic, pushing Jirongo's car about 25 metres from the point of collision. He sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Unanswered Questions Fuel Probe

While the DPP urges patience, Jirongo's family has publicly questioned the circumstances leading to his death, particularly how he ended up on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway when he was believed to be travelling from Karen to his home in Gigiri. Family spokesperson and former MP Fred Gumo has demanded a thorough reconstruction of his movements. In response, detectives are expanding their inquiry to include interviews with individuals Jirongo met at a restaurant in Karen earlier that night.

The driver of the bus, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, was interrogated and released on cash bail pending further investigation into causing death by dangerous driving. He is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025.
