A Kenyan woman in the UK escapes jail time after her attempt to burn down a neighbor's house is foiled by heavy rain and caught on camera.

A neighborhood feud turns deadly serious in Kent as a former nurse tries to torch a home, only for the British weather to thwart her plans and land her in court.
It is often said that the British weather is miserable, but for one family in Ashford, Kent, a rainy night was the difference between life and death. Magdaline Wangeci, a 49-year-old Kenyan woman, has narrowly avoided a prison term after a court heard the chilling details of her attempt to set fire to her neighbor's house. The incident, captured on a Ring doorbell camera, shows the former nurse approaching the property in her nightclothes, consumed by a "revenge" mission that could have ended in tragedy.
The footage, played in court, paints a picture of premeditated malice. Wangeci is seen striking matches and throwing them at the front door of Jennifer Young, her neighbor with whom she had a long-standing dispute. Inside, the family slept, oblivious to the danger on their doorstep. However, nature had other plans. The damp conditions of the English autumn meant the doormat was sodden with rain. The matches, rather than igniting an inferno, sizzled and died. "It was an act of God," one observer noted. "If that mat had been dry, the fire would have blocked the only exit."
Wangeci, who appeared in court visibly shaken, pleaded guilty to attempted arson. Her defense team argued that she was suffering from significant mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, at the time of the offense. The judge, taking this into account along with her previous good character, handed down a suspended sentence. It was a reprieve for Wangeci, but a terrifying close call for the Young family.
The case serves as a somber reminder of the unseen battles people fight behind closed doors. Wangeci’s descent from a nurse—a profession dedicated to saving lives—to an arsonist is a tragedy in itself. She has avoided jail, but the stain on her reputation and the broken trust with her neighbors will take a lifetime to repair.
For the Young family, the sound of rain on the roof will likely never sound the same again. It will forever be the sound of their salvation.
