The Attorney General shifts all marriage registration to the eCitizen portal, ending manual certificate issuance to improve security and efficiency.
The era of the handwritten marriage certificate is officially over.In a sweeping digitization move, the Office of the Attorney General has announced that all marriage registration services have migrated exclusively to the eCitizen platform, effective immediately.
The directive, which came into force on January 13, 2026, discontinues the manual printing and issuance of Registrar’s Certificates and Special Licenses. The move is part of a broader government strategy to seal loopholes, curb fraud, and streamline public services.
The Registrar of Marriages outlined the new protocol, which places the power of registration in the digital realmCouples must now apply, pay, and download their documents via the web.
"Consequently, all Registrar's Certificates shall be digitally generated," the statement read. "We are moving to a system that is secure, efficient, and accessible."
While the romance remains analog, the bureaucracy is now fully digital. The shift promises to eliminate the notorious "missing file" syndrome and long queues that have plagued the registry for years. For Kenyan couples, the path to "I do" just got a little less paper-heavy.
