In a landmark move to operationalize the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Kenya has launched two digital platforms—BiasharaLink and Deal House—aimed at revolutionizing how African nations trade. The launch, held in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the AU Summit, positions Kenya as a pioneer in "digital economic diplomacy," shifting the focus from signing treaties to closing deals.

From Protocol to Profit

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who officiated the launch, termed the initiative a paradigm shift."We are turning diplomacy into delivery," he stated. BiasharaLink acts as a digital marketplace, allowing embassies to capture and verify trade opportunities, while Deal House serves as the execution engine, matching these opportunities with investors and financing. This ecosystem is designed to solve the "information asymmetry" that has long plagued intra-African trade.

• The Gap: Despite the AfCFTA creating a market of 1.3 billion people, intra-African trade remains low at around 15%. These platforms aim to dismantle the non-tariff barriers of lack of information and trust.
• Strategic Partnership: Developed by Real Sources Africa, the platforms empower diplomatic missions to act as trade facilitators, actively scouting for markets for their home industries.

A Model for the Continent

The initiative has received backing from the AfCFTA Secretariat, with Secretary General Wamkele Mene praising it as a practical solution to a theoretical problem. "This is exactly what we need—tools that put power in the hands of the private sector," Mene noted. By digitizing the trade pipeline, Kenya is hoping to empower SMEs and women-led businesses, who often lack the resources to navigate complex cross-border regulations.

As African Heads of State deliberate on the future of the continent in Addis Ababa, Kenya has put a working solution on the table.
