Months after being paroled from a US prison, Mohammed Abduba Dida has launched a global spiritual and philanthropic network, a move analysts see as a significant pivot that could reshape his public influence ahead of future political cycles.

Former Kenyan presidential candidate Mwalimu Mohammed Abduba Dida has embarked on a new trajectory, launching a global spiritual and philanthropic initiative just months after his release from a United States prison. In a video released on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Dida, now based in Minnesota, USA, announced the formation of the 'Dida Global Network' (DGN), calling for global unity and spiritual consciousness. This venture marks a dramatic shift for the two-time presidential contender, moving his focus from the Kenyan ballot box to a broader international stage centered on faith and charity.
"This is your brother, your elder, your leader, presidential aspirant Mohamed Dida, hereby welcoming you to Dida Global Network," he stated in the announcement. He urged followers to join him "so that we can unite, one family and one God, one nation and one God." The initiative is coupled with plans to revive the Dida Foundation International, a charity he registered in 2017 to support underprivileged communities.
Dida, a former English Literature and Religion teacher at prestigious institutions like Lenana School, first captured the nation's attention during the 2013 presidential debates. Running on an Alliance for Real Change (ARK) party ticket, his witty, candid, and often humorous style offered a stark contrast to the seasoned political figures on stage. He positioned himself as a moralist and an agent of change, campaigning against corruption and poor governance. In the March 2013 General Election, Dida secured 52,848 votes, or 0.43% of the total, finishing ahead of several established politicians. He ran again in the 2017 General Election, garnering 38,004 votes. Though his electoral success was limited, his unique approach to politics earned him a notable following and cemented his place as a memorable figure in Kenya's political landscape.
After his 2017 campaign, Dida largely withdrew from the public eye and reportedly relocated to the US in 2019. His time abroad was marked by significant personal and legal challenges. In July 2021, he was convicted on charges including stalking and violating a restraining order involving his American wife. He was sentenced to seven years at the Big Muddy Correctional Centre in Illinois. Dida was subsequently granted parole in April 2025, having served three years of his sentence. His re-emergence is defined by this pivot to spirituality and philanthropy. Family members have indicated his determination to rebuild his life and contribute positively to society. The Dida Global Network appears to be the primary vehicle for this new mission, focusing on transcending political, tribal, and social divides through a message of universal humanity.
Dida's new direction enters a complex Kenyan landscape where religion and politics are deeply intertwined. Religious leaders and institutions have historically wielded significant influence in shaping public discourse, advocating for social justice, and mobilizing communities. While Kenya is a secular state, political leaders frequently use religious platforms and rhetoric to connect with the electorate. Analysts are watching closely to see if Dida's spiritual platform is a permanent departure from politics or a strategic repositioning. His focus on morality, unity, and justice echoes the core themes of his previous political campaigns under the Alliance for Real Change, whose values include love, trust, and community empowerment. Whether this new, non-political platform will allow him to cultivate a different kind of influence—one that could be leveraged in future political arenas—remains a subject of speculation. His return to public life, albeit from afar, introduces a renewed voice to the national conversation on leadership and ethics.
