Heavy overnight rainfall has caused catastrophic flooding across Nairobi, leaving at least ten dead, submerging the South C neighborhood, and severely disrupting major transport routes.
The Kenyan capital awoke to scenes of utter devastation on Saturday morning. Torrential downpours overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure, turning busy highways into raging rivers and residential parking lots into underwater graveyards for hundreds of vehicles.
The recurring nightmare of Nairobi's rainy season has once again exposed the fragile underbelly of the city's urban planning. With the death toll climbing and infrastructure buckling, the crisis highlights the urgent, life-or-death need for climate-resilient infrastructure in East Africa's primary commercial hub.
According to the National Police Service, search and rescue operations have recovered ten bodies so far. Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda confirmed the grim statistics, noting that the victims included individuals swept away by fast-moving currents, two who suffered fatal electrocution, and others who tragically drowned while trapped inside their submerged vehicles.
Rescue teams, heavily bolstered by the overnight deployment of the military by President William Ruto, scoured the muddy banks of the Nairobi River and blocked drainage channels. Bodies were recovered in diverse areas, from the Gikomba Kwa Mbao market area to the fringes of Visa Oshwal Primary School in Parklands. The police have warned that the fatality count could rise as several residents remain unaccounted for.
The affluent residential and commercial district of South C emerged as one of the hardest-hit zones. Images of the aftermath painted a dystopian picture: streets were littered with overturned cars lying on their roofs, tossed about by the sheer hydraulic force of the floodwaters. Over 100 vehicles were severely damaged citywide, with South C alone accounting for more than half of the casualties.
The logistical paralysis extended well beyond the city limits. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued an urgent advisory for motorists plying the Maai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok route. Silt deposits and debris washed down from the escarpments rendered the critical economic artery nearly impassable, mirroring the tragic Mai Mahiu tunnel blockages of previous years.
The disaster is a symptom of a much larger, systemic failure combining changing weather patterns with rapid, unchecked urbanization. The Kenya Meteorological Department had issued severe weather warnings, predicting heavier-than-usual rainfall exacerbated by lingering climate anomalies.
Key factors contributing to the devastation include:
Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku announced the activation of national disaster preparedness protocols. Emergency response desks have been established across sub-counties, while the Kenya Red Cross Society is working to distribute non-food items to displaced families in vulnerable informal settlements like Mukuru and Mathare.
"The teams are out there for a search and rescue mission. Most roads and estates were flooded, making it impossible for the rescue mission last night," Commander Seda explained, highlighting the severe challenges faced by first responders in the dark.
As the city attempts to dry out and assess the financial damages—estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of shillings—the government faces mounting pressure from weary citizens. "We cannot normalize losing lives to rain," lamented a stranded commuter on Uhuru Highway, echoing the collective frustration of a city held hostage by the skies.
