One person has died in a quarry collapse in Kirinyaga, exposing the deadly negligence and desperation fueling the region’s illegal stone mining industry.

The dusty pits of Kirinyaga have claimed another life. In a tragic recurrence of a known danger, one person has been killed after a stone quarry collapsed in the Kimuri area of Mwea. The incident, which occurred early Friday, highlights the deadly cost of the construction boom and the desperate measures residents take to eke out a living.
This death is not an accident; it is a systemic failure. Quarries in the region have been flagged multiple times as death traps, yet operations continue, fueled by the insatiable demand for building stones in the growing towns of Central Kenya. The "So What" is the government's inability to enforce safety regulations in the informal mining sector, leaving workers to gamble their lives for a daily wage of less than KES 500.
Witnesses report that the victim was mining deep into the quarry wall when the overhang gave way, burying him under tons of rubble. While rescue efforts were launched immediately by fellow workers and local police, they were too late.
Kirinyaga is no stranger to such tragedies. In August 2023, three people died in a similar collapse in the same Kimuri area. In 2020, an eight-year-old boy was buried alive. The pattern is undeniable: a collapse happens, authorities issue warnings, operations pause for a week, and then resume. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) regulations require stabilization of quarry walls, but in the informal pits of Mwea, compliance is non-existent.
As the family prepares for a funeral, the community is left with anger and resignation. The stones from this quarry will go on to build sturdy houses for the wealthy, while the men who dig them lie in graves dug too soon.
