Under the cover of darkness, bailiffs moved to evict protesters guarding a piece of 1950s heritage, sparking a tense standoff over history versus modernization.

It was 4 a.m. on Monday when the silence of Sheringham was shattered by bailiffs moving in under darkness, targeting a group of sleeping protesters guarding a 1950s bus shelter.
This pre-dawn operation marks a volatile escalation in a dispute over heritage and modernization, as Norfolk County Council seeks to demolish the structure citing safety concerns, while locals dig in to protect their history.
The conflict, which echoes the global struggle between bureaucratic development and community preservation, reached a fever pitch when enforcement officials attempted to enforce an eviction notice served days prior. The council argues the site must be replaced for accessibility, but the community views the demolition as an erasure of Sheringham’s character.
Liz Withington, a councillor for the North Norfolk district, was alerted to the raid by frantic messages from the site. She described the scene as chaotic and heavy-handed.
“I was called and I got there within 10 minutes but initially there were three people sort of dozing and one was well asleep [when the officials] came in,” Withington noted. She alleged that the officers told the campers they had “got to get out” and employed tactics she described as “quite intimidatory.”
Despite the early hour and the surprise element, the protesters refused to yield. A tense game of cat-and-mouse ensued on Station Approach, near the town's heritage railway station.
“Enforcement officers [were] sitting very intimidatingly across the road from us, so we can’t leave the shelter or even go to the loo,” Withington emphasized.
As the sun rose over Norfolk, the stalemate remained. What began as a local planning dispute has morphed into a symbol of civic resistance, with the community making it clear: they will not let their heritage be bulldozed without a fight.
