Elgeyo Marakwet County says it will soon implement a new Sports Act to regulate coaches and ensure sports camps are safe
Elgeyo Marakwet County – May 20, 2025 – The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has announced plans to convene local athletes in the coming weeks to begin implementation of a newly enacted County Sports Act aimed at improving governance and standards across all sports disciplines.
According to Deputy Governor Grace Cheserek, the new law is designed to professionalize sports within the county. It will introduce minimum standards for coaches, strengthen oversight of athletic training camps, and ensure safe, well-managed environments for athletes—especially female sportspeople.
“We want to make sure our athletes train under certified coaches and in camps that are safe, ethical, and well-regulated,” said Cheserek. “This Act will help restore integrity in sports development across the county.”
One of the key pillars of the Sports Act is enhancing athlete protection, particularly for women. The law mandates the registration of training camps and the vetting of coaching personnel, helping to guard against abuse, exploitation, and substandard practices.
As a county renowned for producing world-class runners, Elgeyo Marakwet aims to set an example in sports governance and athlete welfare. The Sports Act will also promote the development of other sports beyond athletics, including football, volleyball, and rugby, by offering structure and support at the grassroots level.
The county plans to hold public sensitization forums and stakeholder consultations, bringing together athletes, coaches, sports federations, and local administrators to ensure smooth rollout and compliance with the new framework.
“We are counting on the cooperation of all players in the sector to make this a success. This Act belongs to the athletes,” Cheserek added.
