Kisumu County issues a strict 7-day notice to remove illegal structures on road reserves, sparking fears of livelihood losses among traders amidst a modernization push.

The bulldozers are revving their engines in the Lakeside City. Kisumu County Government has issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to owners of illegal structures: bring them down, or we will do it for you.
This latest directive targets temporary structures, shanties, and unauthorized extensions sitting on road reserves, drainage wayleaves, and public land. It is the newest phase in Governor Anyang' Nyong'o’s relentless—and often controversial—modernization campaign, aimed at transforming Kisumu into a metropolis that rivals Nairobi and Mombasa in order and aesthetics.
The move dovetails with an intensified crackdown by the National Construction Authority (NCA), which recently issued stoppage orders to construction sites in Seme and Kisumu Central for lacking approvals. "We cannot trade safety for expediency," an NCA official stated. "Buildings without registered professionals are death traps in waiting."
For the Juakali artisans and "Mama Mboga" traders operating on the margins, however, this "cleanup" feels like a "cleanout." Many fear a repeat of the brutal demolitions seen during the run-up to the Africities Summit, where livelihoods were flattened in the name of beautification.
Governor Nyong'o has previously cited Washington D.C. as his planning model, dreaming of a zoned, orderly city. But as the clock ticks down on the seven-day notice, the tension between this First World vision and the Third World reality of his constituents is palpable.
Residents are advised to comply immediately to avoid the cost of forced demolition and potential prosecution. For Kisumu, the price of progress is being calculated in twisted metal and displaced dreams.
