Mourning ceremonies for the late Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno descended into chaos and political confrontation at his Mogondo village home, laying bare the deep-seated ethnic and political fractures in Narok County.

Mourning ceremonies for the late Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament, Johana Ng’eno, descended into chaos and political confrontation at his Mogondo village home, laying bare the deep-seated ethnic and political fractures in Narok County.
What was intended to be a solemn occasion to honor the deceased legislator, who tragically perished in a helicopter crash in Nandi County, quickly disintegrated into a chaotic spectacle. The incident highlighted the volatile intersection of grief and local politics in the region.
The disruption is a stark reminder of the fragile political ecosystem in Emurua Dikirr. The sudden vacuum left by Ng’eno’s demise has inadvertently accelerated political posturing, transforming a sanctuary of mourning into a theater for settling scores and advancing divisive agendas.
Tensions reached a boiling point when a local activist, Johana Kiprono, widely known as Kamilan, was confronted by sections of the mourners. The anger was sparked by incendiary videos Kamilan had allegedly circulated on social media following the fatal crash. In the controversial posts, the activist questioned the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and reportedly warned members of certain communities against attending the funeral proceedings.
The remarks were interpreted as ethnically charged and divisive, deeply offending Ng’eno’s supporters and family members. When Kamilan arrived at the condolence gathering, the underlying outrage exploded into physical violence.
Angry mourners aggressively turned on the activist, leading to a physical altercation that left him injured. The situation escalated so rapidly that the localized security detail was initially overwhelmed.
The backdrop to this unrest is the devastating loss of Ng’eno and five others, whose Eurocopter AS350 crashed and burst into flames in a forested area at Chepkiep in Mosop Constituency on February 28, 2026. An autopsy conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed that the victims, including the pilot, retired Colonel George Were, died from multiple severe trauma injuries and burns.
The trauma of the crash has deeply unsettled the region. For years, Ng’eno was a towering, if controversial, figure known for his fierce independence and unabashed rhetoric. His absence has left a profound void that various political factions are already maneuvering to fill, even before he is laid to rest.
In the aftermath of the clashes, local leaders and community elders issued urgent appeals for peace. They condemned the politicization of the tragedy, urging residents to honor the MP’s legacy with dignity.
Furthermore, leaders across the national spectrum, including those who recently visited the family, have cautioned against using the tragedy as a political weapon. Senator Richard Onyonka’s controversial remarks suggesting foul play due to regional mineral rights have only added fuel to the speculative fire, making the security environment even more precarious.
"We must not allow our sorrow to be weaponized. The greatest tribute we can offer our fallen leader is a peaceful and unified farewell," stated a community elder striving to heal the fresh rifts.
