CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2025 Cancelled Due to Inadequate Preparation Time
The 2025 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, a prominent East and Central African national team football tournament, has been cancelled due to insufficient preparation time, officials announced, with plans to hold the event next year instead.

Cecafa Cancels 2025 Senior Challenge Cup Amid Logistical Hurdles and Time Constraints
NAIROBI, Kenya – June 4, 2025
In a major disappointment for regional football fans, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) has officially called off the 2025 edition of the Senior Challenge Cup, citing critical logistical and planning challenges.
The tournament, long regarded as the flagship competition for national teams across East and Central Africa, was expected to draw intense rivalry and showcase emerging talent from across the region. However, the inability to secure adequate preparation time for host nations and participating teams has forced the curtain to fall—at least for this year.
"Deeply Regrettable," Says Cecafa Boss
Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye confirmed the decision in a public statement, offering an apology to fans, national federations, and sponsors, and acknowledging the widespread disappointment likely to follow the announcement.
“We understand the importance of this tournament to the region, but given the constraints in scheduling, funding, and host readiness, pushing ahead would have compromised the quality and integrity of the event,” Musonye said.
He emphasized that the cancellation was not taken lightly, but rather as a necessary step to ensure future editions are delivered to the standards expected by stakeholders and the footballing community.
Missed Opportunity for Regional Talent
The cancellation deals a blow not just to fans, but to emerging players and national squads who rely on the tournament for vital international exposure. Often used as a platform for scouting talent, the Senior Challenge Cup has historically served as a springboard for players aiming to break into continental and global competitions.
“This was our chance to test our younger players against top regional sides,” lamented a coach from one national team. “Now that window is gone—for now.”
2026 Plans Already in Motion
While the disappointment is tangible, Cecafa has vowed to relaunch the tournament in 2026 with more robust planning and early coordination with member federations. The council is expected to begin preparations well in advance to avoid similar disruptions, and has hinted at exploring new hosting models and expanded partnerships to ensure sustainability.
As regional football continues to grow in profile and competitiveness, stakeholders are hopeful that this pause will lead to a stronger, more professionally organized comeback next year.
