Busia County has launched a new health campaign to combat the rising incidence of cataracts and glaucoma, especially among the elderly, by offering free screenings, treatments, and community health worker training to address preventable vision loss.
Busia, Kenya – The Busia County Health Department has unveiled a new public health initiative aimed at tackling the increasing prevalence of preventable eye diseases among its residents. During a health forum convened on June 1, county officials expressed concern over a noticeable rise in cases of cataracts and glaucoma, particularly affecting the elderly population, and underscored the critical importance of regular eye screenings and public awareness campaigns.
To address this growing health challenge, Health officials announced plans to deploy mobile eye clinics across the county and to partner with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to provide free eye examinations and basic treatments. They strongly urged residents, especially those at higher risk, to seek early diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing that many common eye conditions can be effectively managed or even reversed with timely and relatively simple interventions, thereby restoring sight and improving quality of life. A key component of the program also includes the training of community health workers, equipping them to detect common eye problems at the grassroots level and facilitate referrals for specialized care.
