The US pledges a "value-driven" partnership to develop Kenya’s $62 billion Mrima Hill mineral deposits, positioning itself as a superior alternative to China’s extraction model.

The United States has officially entered the scramble for Kenya’s mineral wealth, pledging a value-driven partnership to unlock the Sh8 trillion potential of Mrima Hill and break China’s stranglehold on critical minerals.
In a direct challenge to Beijing's dominance in Africa, Washington has laid its cards on the table. US Deputy Assistant Secretary Josh Kroon, speaking at a high-level mining forum in Nairobi, articulated a strategy that goes beyond mere extraction. "Our goal is not to extract and leave, but to build foundational elements of an industrial base that lasts beyond a single project," Kroon declared. This statement was a thinly veiled jibe at China's resource-backed loan model, which critics argue leaves African nations with debt and depleted mines.
The prize is significant. Mrima Hill in Kwale County is home to one of the world's largest undeveloped deposits of rare earth minerals and niobium, with an estimated value of $62.4 billion (Sh8.03 trillion). These minerals are the lifeblood of the modern economy, essential for everything from electric vehicle batteries to advanced military guidance systems.
The US interest is not operating in a vacuum. It is part of a coordinated Western push to secure supply chains independent of Chinese control.
For Kenya, this rivalry is a lever to be pulled. The government has the opportunity to play the superpowers against each other to secure the best deal for its citizens. The Sh8 trillion at Mrima Hill can either be a curse that fuels corruption and environmental degradation, or the capital that industrializes the coast.
The Americans have made their pitch: we are the "better partner." Now, it is up to Nairobi to ensure that whoever digs the hole fills the treasury—and builds the factory.
