The European carrier bets on local cuisine to woo travelers, introducing regional dishes like Cod Mbongo on routes from Nairobi and beyond.

Travelers flying from Nairobi to Europe on Brussels Airlines will finally taste familiar spices at 30,000 feet, as the carrier launches a culinary offensive to capture the African market.
Beginning this month, the Lufthansa Group subsidiary is introducing African-inspired meals on flights departing from sub-Saharan Africa. It is a strategic pivot designed to differentiate the carrier in a fiercely competitive airspace dominated by Middle Eastern giants and local heavyweights like Kenya Airways.
For decades, the standard complaint regarding long-haul flights has been the bland, standardized fare. Brussels Airlines is attempting to disrupt this monotony by localizing its catering. The new menu, which will rotate regularly to keep options fresh, includes specific regional delicacies designed to resonate with African passengers.
Philip Mortier, the Inflight Product Manager at Brussels Airlines, described the initiative as part of a broader goal to create a "boutique hotel in the air."
“Offering meals inspired by the rich cuisine of the African continent reinforces that promise even further,” Mortier noted. “Whether passengers want a final taste of home, to hold on to the feeling of their vacation a little longer, or to discover new flavors, we are confident these African-inspired meals will be appreciated.”
This culinary upgrade is not merely aesthetic; it is a calculated business move. Brussels Airlines currently serves 18 destinations in sub-Saharan Africa, making the continent a critical revenue stream. With competitors like Ethiopian Airlines already famous for serving traditional Injera inflight, European carriers are under pressure to prove they understand the local market.
The airline has been investing heavily to upgrade the passenger experience beyond just the food tray. Recent enhancements include:
As the battle for the African sky intensifies, the way to a passenger's loyalty may very well be through their stomach. By embracing the bold flavors of the continent, Brussels Airlines is betting that a touch of home is the ultimate luxury.
