Kenya Power has announced scheduled maintenance blackouts for Thursday, January 22, affecting Nairobi, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Kirinyaga.

Kenya Power (KPLC) has issued a scheduled blackout notice that will plunge parts of six counties into darkness this Thursday, January 22. The utility firm is conducting "essential system maintenance," a euphemism that brings little comfort to businesses and households in Nairobi, Nyeri, and beyond.
The interruption is scheduled to run from as early as 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The "So What?" is the economic disruption: thousands of small businesses, from welding shops in South B to dairy coolers in Nyandarua, will lose a full day of productivity.
The maintenance dragnet covers a wide swath of the country. KPLC insists the shutdowns are necessary to repair worn transmission lines and prevent unplanned failures.
"We are upgrading the network to serve you better," reads the standard KPLC notice. But for the barber in Engineer town or the cyber café owner in Nairobi, Thursday is effectively a write-off.
Residents are advised to charge their devices and plan accordingly. In the modern Kenyan economy, reliability remains a luxury, and maintenance day is just another hurdle to survival.
