Central Bank’s bold new framework promises mentorship and market access, aiming to shatter the Sh300 billion credit gap.

The era of empty promises for women in business is officially over. In a landmark shift for the financial sector, Kenya has operationalized the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Code, a global framework designed to dismantle the systemic barriers that have kept female-led enterprises starved of capital.
This is not just another policy paper; it is a structural overhaul of how banks lend to women. The Code, championed by the Central Bank of Kenya, compels financial institutions to look beyond traditional collateral requirements and design products that actually work for women. With an estimated credit gap of over KES 300 billion, the stakes for the economy could not be higher.
At the heart of this initiative is data. For years, banks have operated in the dark, failing to disaggregate lending data by gender. The Code changes that, forcing transparency that will reveal exactly who is getting funded and who is being left behind. Susan Koech, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, has been instrumental in driving this agenda, signaling that the regulator will no longer tolerate financial exclusion.
More than 40 institutions have already signed up, pledging to tailor their services to the unique needs of women entrepreneurs. This collective action is expected to unlock billions in untapped economic potential, transforming micro-enterprises into formidable corporate players.
"We are moving from financial inclusion to financial empowerment," the initiative promises. For the woman trader in Gikomba or the tech founder in Kilimani, the doors to the bank vault are finally creaking open.
