German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul declares Kenya a "geopolitical anchor," pledging deeper security ties and more jobs for Kenyans in Germany.

German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul has lauded Kenya as a "beacon of stability" in a turbulent region, praising Nairobi’s pivotal role in mediating conflicts in the Horn of Africa and its leadership in the Haiti security mission.
Speaking in Nairobi during a high-profile two-day strategic visit, Wadephul emphasized that Germany views Kenya not just as a development partner, but as a geopolitical anchor. His visit comes as Berlin seeks to deepen its footprint in East Africa, countering influence from other global powers.
"Kenya plays a key mediator role in the region and shoulders significant responsibility for peace and security in Somalia and Haiti," Wadephul told a joint press briefing with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. "In a world of fragmenting alliances, Germany stands with those who champion multilateralism and the rule of law."
The talks at the Railways offices went beyond pleasantries. The two nations committed to expanding cooperation on counter-terrorism, climate action, and renewable energy. Germany, a global leader in green technology, is keen to tap into Kenya’s renewable energy grid, which is 85% green.
Accompanying the minister was a delegation of German business tycoons scouting for opportunities in infrastructure and agriculture. Wadephul’s message to them was clear: Kenya is open for business. "I want to see more German business invest in Kenya," he declared.
For Kenya, this endorsement from Europe’s largest economy is a diplomatic coup. It validates President Ruto’s aggressive foreign policy and positions Nairobi as the primary gateway for Western investment in East Africa. As Wadephul flies out, the challenge remains: turning these diplomatic handshakes into jobs for the Kenyan youth.
