Months after tragic attacks left over 100 dead, the Benue State Government rolls out a massive housing and health insurance initiative for displaced persons.
In a beacon of hope following devastating communal violence, the Benue State Government has officially commenced the resettlement of residents displaced by the horrific June 2025 Yelewata attacks.
The initiative, fueled by a massive N1.25 billion (approx. KES 100 million) intervention fund, aims to restore dignity to thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). For regions across East Africa grappling with their own displacement crises—from the Rift Valley to the Horn of Africa—Benue's structured, multi-donor approach offers a compelling blueprint for post-conflict recovery.
Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber, confirmed that the funds, pooled from high-profile donors including Nigeria's First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, are being aggressively deployed. The model focuses not just on shelter, but on holistic rehabilitation.
The government is currently constructing 60 two-bedroom homes in a clustered settlement in Yelewata, deliberately situated near ancestral farmlands to facilitate a return to agricultural livelihoods.
To ensure systemic support, the funds have been meticulously allocated across critical survival sectors:
The urgency of the health enrolment was tragically underscored recently when two pregnant IDPs in host communities died due to an inability to access maternal care. The new insurance drive aims to prevent such fatal systemic failures.
"Transitioning from emergency relief to durable solutions is the only way to heal a fractured community," Aber stated, setting a new standard for internal displacement management.
