The People’s Liberation Army launches 'Justice Mission 2025,' encircling the island and threatening shipping lanes vital to global—and Kenyan—supply chains.

The Taiwan Strait, a jugular vein of the global economy, is tightening today as Beijing launches massive live-fire drills simulating a total blockade of the self-governing island.
While the artillery fire is thousands of kilometers away, these maneuvers—dubbed "Justice Mission 2025"—threaten to choke one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. For Kenya, a nation heavily reliant on maritime imports flowing through Mombasa, any disruption in this corridor risks sending shockwaves through the cost of electronics, machinery, and essential goods.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has framed the operation as a punitive measure. According to Colonel Shi Yi, a spokesperson for the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command, the military has deployed naval, air, and rocket forces to effectively surround Taiwan. The objective is clear: simulate the sealing off of major ports and the striking of maritime targets.
In a move that escalates tensions significantly, Chinese coast guard vessels have also been dispatched to conduct "law enforcement inspections" around Taiwan’s outer islands. This signals a shift from mere military posturing to a rehearsal of administrative control over the waters.
Colonel Shi characterized the drills as:
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence has not taken the provocation lightly. On Monday morning, officials in Taipei accused Beijing of deliberately undermining regional peace. The ministry confirmed it had dispatched "appropriate forces" to monitor the situation and conduct counter-combat readiness exercises.
"Defending democracy and freedom is no provocation," the ministry stated, emphasizing that the existence of the Republic of China—Taiwan's formal name—cannot be used as an excuse for aggression.
The immediate danger, however, falls on civilians at sea. Taiwan’s coast guard warned that the sheer scope of the Chinese drills poses a "significant threat" to the navigational safety of merchant vessels and the operational rights of fishermen. For the global logistics network, which connects Asian manufacturing hubs to markets in East Africa, such instability is a flashing red light.
