Bamburi Cement moves to sell prime Mombasa land worth billions, aiming to liquidate non-core assets and reinvest in sustainable manufacturing amidst a tightening competitive landscape.

Cement giant Bamburi Cement PLC has initiated the disposal of a prime tract of land in Mombasa valued at approximately Ksh 2 billion. The move is part of a broader strategic realignment to liquidate non-core assets and bolster its balance sheet amidst a tough manufacturing environment.
The land, located in the high-value industrial corridor of Mombasa, has been on the company’s books for decades. Its disposal signals Bamburi’s shift towards a "capital-light" model, focusing intensely on its core business of clinker and cement production while shedding real estate dead weight. Sources close to the deal indicate that the land may be repurposed for a massive waste-to-energy project or a logistics hub, aligning with the region's infrastructure boom.
Bamburi's decision comes at a time when the cement industry is grappling with high energy costs and cheap imports. By unlocking the capital tied up in real estate, the firm aims to reinvest in modernizing its kilns and expanding its "Green Cement" portfolio.
There is a strong sustainability undercurrent to this disposal. Bamburi has previously engaged in partnerships to use the land for solid waste management, converting municipal waste into alternative fuel for its kilns. This "circular economy" approach suggests that the disposal might actually be a transfer to a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) designed to manage this energy transition.
"We are not just selling land; we are unlocking value for the future of sustainable manufacturing," a company insider remarked. The deal is currently awaiting regulatory approval and the green light from shareholders.
As the cement wars heat up in East Africa, Bamburi’s maneuver is a clear signal: lean, green, and liquid is the only way to survive.
