Pathologist links Alphy Migasha’s fatal pulmonary embolism directly to a leg fracture sustained during a brutal assault by a KDF soldier.

The tragic death of Alphy Migasha, a beloved gym trainer from Umoja, has been scientifically linked to a brutal assault, turning a case of physical harm into a homicide investigation. An autopsy has confirmed that Migasha was killed by a pulmonary embolism—a blood clot in the lungs—that originated from a leg fracture he sustained during a vicious beating.
The findings by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor have provided the family with the grim clarity they sought, but justice remains elusive. Migasha died at his home on January 17, weeks after the initial assault on December 22. He had reportedly vomited blood before collapsing, a classic and terrifying symptom of a pulmonary embolism where a clot blocks the blood flow to the lungs.
The sequence of events is harrowing. CCTV footage from a club in Umoja One estate captured the moment Migasha was confronted by a man identified as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, Nicholas Njue Ireri. The footage shows the soldier forcefully taking Migasha to the ground and raining blows upon him while onlookers watched in shock. The motive is alleged to be a dispute over a woman, with the soldier accusing the trainer of having an affair with his wife.
"The blood clot travelled to the lung, causing death. We believe it emanated from a leg injury he had," Dr. Oduor stated at the City Mortuary. This medical conclusion directly ties the assault to the death, closing the loop for prosecutors.
Umoja is a neighborhood that knows hardship, but the senseless killing of a young man dedicated to fitness and health has struck a nerve. The impunity with which the assault was carried out—and the delay in arresting the known suspect—has fueled anger.
As the autopsy report is filed into the police docket, the charge sheet must now change from assault to murder or manslaughter. The science has spoken; Alphy Migasha did not just die; he was killed. The burden now lies with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to find the man who broke his leg, and ultimately, took his life.
