Kenyan customs officials and the Anti-Narcotics Unit seized 200 kilograms of high-grade heroin hidden in a timber shipment at the Port of Mombasa on June 2, marking one of the largest drug busts in recent years. Two port workers have been arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt.
Mombasa, Kenya – Customs officials at the Port of Mombasa, working in collaboration with various security agencies, made a significant drug seizure on June 2, intercepting 200 kilograms of high-grade heroin. The illicit narcotics were cleverly concealed within a shipment of timber. This operation, spearheaded by the Anti-Narcotics Unit, marks one of the largest and most substantial drug busts in Kenya in recent years.
During the meticulously planned operation, authorities successfully arrested two port workers who are suspected of having aided the international smuggling attempt. The Drugs Enforcement Unit (DEU) indicated that the seized heroin was likely destined for international drug syndicates, and they praised the effective inter-agency teamwork that led to the successful interception. Comprehensive investigations are currently ongoing to trace the origin and intended destination of the drugs, as well as to identify and apprehend any other conspirators involved in the sophisticated smuggling ring. This bust underscores the continued efforts by Kenyan authorities to combat drug trafficking through its major ports of entry.
