The US Embassy has deployed a team of Fulbright scholars to Kenyan classrooms, aiming to bridge cultures and boost language skills in rural counties.

A new chapter in US-Kenya relations has opened, not in a boardroom, but in a classroom. The United States Embassy in Nairobi has officially welcomed a cohort of four Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) and an English Language Fellow, who will spend the next 10 months living and working in Kilifi and Kajiado counties.
The deployment is part of the prestigious Fulbright program, the US government’s flagship international educational exchange. For the next academic year, these American educators will trade their homes for the dusty chalkboards of Kenyan schools, tasked with strengthening English proficiency and fostering cultural understanding.
The mission goes beyond verbs and nouns. "Successful candidates will not just be teaching English but explaining the U.S. and its culture to local citizens," the program outline states. Conversely, they will return to America as ambassadors of Kenyan culture.
One of the key beneficiaries is the Ummul Qura Educational Centre. Principal Shadia Mohammed could not hide her excitement as she welcomed the team. "Having them interact with students is a mutual benefit," she said. "It opens our students' eyes to the world."
As the new school term gathers pace, these American guests are about to get a crash course in Kenyan hospitality, resilience, and perhaps, a little bit of Swahili slang.
