The US officially exits the WHO today, a move by President Trump that slashes funding for critical African health programs and leaves the world vulnerable to future pandemics.

The unthinkable has happened. As of today, January 22, 2026, the United States is no longer a member of the World Health Organization. President Donald Trump’s isolationist doctrine has dealt a sledgehammer blow to the global health architecture, leaving the world exposed to the next pandemic.
The withdrawal, initiated by an executive order on Day One of his second term, officially matures today after the mandatory one-year notice period. It is a divorce that leaves the WHO with a gaping financial wound—the US contributed over 18% of its budget—and a crisis of legitimacy.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made a final, desperate plea from Geneva: "Withdrawing from the WHO is a lose for the United States, and it's a lose for the rest of the world." But the White House is unmoved, citing the agency's alleged "China-centric" bias and failures during COVID-19.
Today, the world is a little sicker and a lot less safe. America has chosen to go it alone, but viruses do not respect borders. When the next outbreak hits, the world may find that the sheriff has not only left town but burned down the station on his way out.
