A Morgan Stanley study reveals the UK is suffering the highest rate of AI-driven job losses among major economies, sparking fears of a "hollowed out" workforce.

The United Kingdom is bearing the brunt of the Artificial Intelligence revolution, with a new study revealing that the British workforce is facing higher displacement rates than any other major economy.
According to a startling report by investment bank Morgan Stanley, the UK is "losing more jobs than it creates" due to AI adoption. While the US and Japan are managing to balance automation with new job creation, Britain’s labor market is showing signs of a "hollowing out," raising alarm bells for policymakers in Westminster.
The study indicates that while British companies are reporting significant productivity gains—an average of 11.5%—these efficiencies are coming directly at the expense of payrolls. The UK’s service-heavy economy, particularly in finance and law, makes it uniquely vulnerable to Generative AI, which excels at automating cognitive tasks.
"The UK is at a crossroads," the report warns. Without urgent investment in reskilling and a strategic shift towards AI-complementary industries, Britain risks becoming a "digital colony"—consuming AI products while exporting its jobs to algorithms. The government is now under immense pressure to introduce safeguards and support systems for the white-collar workers suddenly finding themselves on the wrong side of technological history.
