Activist Julius Kamau caused a scene at Nairobi’s Milimani Law Courts by lying on the floor and condemning the judiciary, prompting his detention. He continued shouting that the courts favour the rich and declared he was standing up for ordinary Kenyans before being hauled away.
Nairobi, Kenya — Courtroom Drama as Activist Confronts Judiciary
Proceedings at the Milimani Law Courts were temporarily disrupted on 25 August 2025 after outspoken civil rights activist Julius Kamau staged a dramatic protest inside the courthouse.
Witnesses reported that Kamau sprawled across the corridor floor, shouting accusations that Kenya’s judiciary is biased and serves the interests of the wealthy. His outburst forced a pause in ongoing cases, with Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina ordering police officers to detain him.
Even as he was dragged away, Kamau continued his tirade, shouting: “You can never get justice in the courts! In a system that only favours the rich, you cannot trust it.” He insisted he was defending ordinary Kenyans, adding that those in power were the ones “sick,” not him.
This was not Kamau’s first confrontation with the courts. In May 2025, he interrupted a hearing to demand accountability for a protester killed during demonstrations. In 2024, he stormed another session involving fellow activists. His repeated disruptions have made him a polarising figure — celebrated by some as a voice of truth and condemned by others as a nuisance to the rule of law.
Legal analysts note Kamau could face charges under Kenya’s Penal Code for creating a disturbance in a public place, an offence punishable by up to one year in jail or a fine. They warn that repeated incidents may strengthen the case for harsher penalties.
The latest protest has ignited debate over the limits of free expression. Supporters argue that Kamau exposes systemic failures in Kenya’s justice system. Critics counter that his theatrics erode public trust in judicial processes and disrespect the sanctity of the courts.
As Kamau awaits a formal decision on charges, the incident highlights the growing tension between civil society activists and state institutions — a struggle that continues to shape Kenya’s democratic space.
