Babu Owino claims overwhelming public demand for his presidential bid, positioning himself as the youthful challenger to the political status quo.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has signalled a dramatic escalation of his national ambitions, claiming he has received “9 million messages” from Kenyans urging him to run for the presidency in 2027—a statement that, while clearly hyperbolic, underscores his growing resonance among younger voters.
Speaking at a public gathering, Owino framed the moment as generational rather than personal. “The youth are tired. They want one of their own,” he said, casting himself as a vehicle for frustrations that have simmered beneath Kenya’s political surface since the last election.
The headline-grabbing figure is unlikely to be literal. But analysts say it is politically instructive. Owino’s rhetoric reflects a measurable shift in youth political mood, particularly among Gen Z and younger millennials who feel excluded by traditional power blocs and weary of elite succession politics.
“Whether it’s nine million or nine thousand isn’t the point,” said a political strategist tracking youth mobilisation. “The point is Owino is articulating a sentiment that is real—alienation, anger, and a hunger for representation.”
Owino has spent recent years cultivating a profile that blends parliamentary activism, courtroom battles, street politics, and a constant social media presence—an approach that mirrors how younger voters consume politics.
Kenya’s demographics favour Owino’s message. Over 70 percent of the population is under 35, a cohort grappling with unemployment, rising costs of living, and a sense that policy decisions are made without them in mind. Owino’s pitch—direct, combative, and unapologetically youth-centric—aims squarely at that bloc.
He has positioned himself as a critic of what he terms the “politics of inheritance”, arguing that power alternates between familiar surnames while new voices are relegated to the margins.
That framing places him in direct opposition to the emerging Ruto–Oburu axis, which many see as the likely centre of gravity in 2027. By doing so, Owino is attempting to disrupt the prevailing two-horse race narrative before it hardens.
Still, translating online enthusiasm and rally applause into a viable presidential campaign remains a formidable challenge. Owino would need:
A national coalition beyond urban youth bases
Significant financing and organisational depth
Endorsements or alliances that bridge generational and regional divides
Critics also question whether his confrontational style—effective in mobilising support—could limit appeal among older or more conservative voters.
“Owino energises,” said one veteran observer. “The open question is whether he can consolidate.”
For now, Owino’s declaration stops short of a formal bid. There is no manifesto, campaign structure, or timeline—only a strategic marker placed firmly in the national conversation. It signals intent, tests public reaction, and pressures established players to take youth politics more seriously.
In Kenyan politics, early declarations often serve less as commitments and more as negotiating tools—leverage for alliances, policy concessions, or kingmaker status. Whether Owino ultimately runs or reshapes the field from within it, his move has already achieved one goal: forcing 2027 contenders to contend with the youth vote as a decisive force, not a footnote.
As the election cycle begins to take shape, one reality is clear: Kenya’s next contest will not be fought only between parties or personalities—but between generations demanding to be heard.
